Brief History of Holy Child Jesus School
Holy Child Jesus School was originally founded as a Catholic, Christian, missionary school to provide Black students with quality education not available to them in near-by schools because of the deep and persistent ill-effects of the segregated schools.
1946 - Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity purchased land known as "Frog Hollow" and established a parish center.
1947 - School was opened to provide quality education for Black children.
1948 - Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration arrived to run the school.
1949 - A brick school building with 4 rooms was completed.
As more children came, more rooms were added.
1950 - The first eighth grade graduation class of six students occurred.
From this grew a school large enough to house 300 students. The present building was completed in 1967 and included grades 1-12. The high school closed in 1980.
Today the school enrolls students from three-year-old Pre-K through grade six.
Since 1947, Holy Child Jesus School has provided a unique, value oriented, quality, Catholic education in a faith community setting. The students become aware of Gods love for them primarily through a curriculum which permeates the total school program and endeavors to help each student develop a positive and healthy self-concept. Each student is made aware of the dignity and respect due all people. The students are encouraged to attain their academic potential.
